Phenomenal: A Look at the Career of AJ Styles
"The Phenomenal One" AJ Styles is one of the newest and hottest acquisitions that WWE has today. With a wide array of grappling and aerial moves, he quickly got the attention of the wrestling world. From NJPW (New Japan Pro Wrestling), Styles made the jump to the WWE as the surprise number two entrant in last year's Royal Rumble. It hyped thousands of wrestling geeks who were watching at the event, and even caused wildfire in the internet and various social media sites. Today, we will take a look at the career of AJ Styles.
Personal Life
Hailing from Gainesville, Georgia, AJ Styles (a.k.a Allen Jones) grew up in a very poor family. Before doing wrestling, Styles, as a dev-out Christian, was a fan of baseball, and someday dreams to become a baseball player himself. But wrestling gave him a new calling in life; he answered the call, and now we call him as the Phenomenal One.
Living with his wife, Wendy, Styles is a father of four kids, 3 boys and a girl.
The Indies
AJ Styles started his career mostly in the independent scene, he was gradually signed in WCW as part of the Air Raid tag team with Air Paris, then had a one match in WWF against Hurricane Helms.
During his run in the independent scene, he has clashed with most of the names that became giants in the pro wrestling world like Samoa Joe, CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Daniel Bryan, Matt Sydal (Evan Bourne), Colt Cabana, Christopher Daniels and many more.
TNA Career
From his indy days, Styles signed with TNA, and became one of the oldest pioneers of TNA. Spending 12 plus years with the company, AJ cemented his career as the best in the sport by becoming the first X Division Champion, and the one who puts the X Division on the map.He also captured multiple championship belts, like:
- Tag Team Championship
- TNA Originals Championship
- NWA World Heavyweight Championship
- TNA World Heavyweight Championship
- Mr. TNA Trophy
With all of these accomplishments, Styles is considered as TNA's greatest natural athlete, poster boy, and TNA's first ever grandslam champion.
WWE Career
Before being signed to WWE, Styles was a 2 time IWGP World Heavyweight Champion in NJPW.
Then, after he was signed, he entered the Royal Rumble as the no. 2 entrant, then being eliminated by Kevin Owens. The next day, Styles defeated Chris Jericho in his debut match, which lead to their tag team formation-turned feud which boiled till Wrestlemania, where Jericho ends the feud by hitting Styles with a Codebreaker mid air.
Then the next day, Styles won a fatal 4 way, which made him a no. 1 contender to Roman Reign's Heavyweight title, which results to 2 straight losses. Currently he is "The Face that Runs the Place" after defeating John Cena at Summerslam.
